Greenstyle’s Sundance Jacket is an intermediate level sewing pattern that requires some knowledge of zippers and knits. If you’ve been itching to take on a project like this, but don’t have the confidence to tackle some of the technical details, now is the time to stretch your skills! We can’t put together the whole jacket in just two hours, but we can practice some of the trickier techniques together.
We will cover: choosing appropriate fabrics, topstitching on stable knits, seaming with both a serger and a sewing machine, hemming stable knits with a sewing machine, shortening zippers, creating pockets with zippered openings, installing a front zipper with a facing.
You will need your own copy of the pattern. Our first five students will receive a PDF pattern, PDF instructions, and a paper copy of the pattern printed by Patternsy in full color with all sizes included. Subsequent registrations will include coupon codes for 15% off the PDF Sundance Jacket on Greenstyle’s website.
Fabric suggestions: Medium to heavy weight stable knits like double knits, Ponte de Roma, scuba knit, and medium-heavy weight Supplex. Fabric should have at least 25% stretch. Please check the pattern for yardage requirements for your style choices.
If you want to sew along, you will need:
- Your usual sewing tools
- A sewing machine that is capable of sewing both straight and zigzag stitches
- A serger (optional)
- Two plastic standard (not invisible-style) zippers, at least 6 inches long
- A zipper foot that is compatible with your machine
- Ball-point and/or stretch sewing machine needles
- Wash away wonder tape or stitch witchery
- Scraps of lightweight stretch fabric, such as athletic mesh or tricot, large enough to cut four pocket pieces
- One separating (jacket) zipper, 24” long, #5 weight is recommended
- Two strips of knit fabric, at least 2 inches wide and 24 inches long, cut with the greatest amount of stretch along the narrow edge
- Two strips of knit fabric, at least 2 inches wide and the length of your separating zipper, cut with the greatest amount of stretch along the narrow edge
- Optional, but a big help: a walking foot that is compatible with your machine
- Optional, but also a big help: fusible tricot interfacing
