I’ve finally been convinced to just #handsew the I’ve finally been convinced to just #handsew the lining of my sundress down and, ok, fine, the results are lovely and I don’t hate it (this is @laraneel, @lisacneel did the convincing.) #sewing #sew
Our newest YouTube video is up showing a super-eas Our newest YouTube video is up showing a super-easy way to turn an edge, even when your fabric is thick or otherwise hard to press. I used fusible interfacing, but #sew-in interfacing would work, too! #sewing #sewingtips the link is in our bio!
Cutting the cuffs on the bias only took a few extr Cutting the cuffs on the bias only took a few extra minutes, but it looks so great! Pattern by @jsterndesigns ; fabric from @treadleyardgoods. #sew #sewing #MeMadeMay #MeMadeEveryday
I’m so pleased with my @jsterndesigns Shirt Jack I’m so pleased with my @jsterndesigns Shirt Jacket! I shortened the body by about 4.5 inches, didn’t make vents in the sides, and cut the collar, collar stand, and cuffs on the bias. I also took in/shaped the side seams by about 2 inches, total. Still tons of ease and a very comfortable way to #sew up this gorgeous flannel from @treadleyardgoods!
Collar and collar stand for my @jsterndesigns Shir Collar and collar stand for my @jsterndesigns Shirt Jacket are complete! Again, not pattern matching, per se, as much as “vibe matching.” #sewing #sew #imakemyownclothes #memademay #memadeeveryday

This is a clip from the Pickles comic strip by Bri This is a clip from the Pickles comic strip by Brian Crane. I think it's a law, or maybe just a custom, that it has to hang somewhere in every fabric shop! I took the day off work to #sew and visit the @textilecentermn 's Special Effects sale today, so I'll probably resemble Opal later (Check the upper body strength on our girl! Four bolts of fabric!) Big thanks and shoutout to @textilecentermn for both holding this really cool sale AND requiring masks! It's so nice to see that they still have a strong commitment to protecting everyone as well as possible. #sewing #FabricShopping
I'm not joking when I say that cutting plaid fabri I'm not joking when I say that cutting plaid fabric sometimes makes me wish I had x-ray vision! If you have pieces that you know you want to match, exactly, like two jacket or shirt fronts on a balanced plaid, an easy way to fake x-ray vision is to simply lay the first piece you cut on top of the pattern piece as you line it up. It's not the only way to match these things, but it might be the fastest! #sewing #sew #shacket #shirtjacket @jsterndesigns @treadleyardgoods
Time to talk about needle-pullers. I often use li Time to talk about needle-pullers.

I often use light needle pullers for medium-weight threads like this waxed linen from @maisonsajouofficiel and 50 weight Londonderry linen thread. The red multi-tool from @bohin_france is best for flat pieces and the hemostat is best for tight spaces. This little hemostat has saved me many painful needle pricks.

For working with heavy threads like this truly stout Tailor's thread from @burnleyandtrowbridge , I find some kind of mechanical assist essential, even when using a heavy needle (I prefer the sashiko style needles from @hiroshima_needle )

I spent more than a decade improving my grip strength for weight lifting and still need help to get that last bit of needle through tightly woven canvas. A butted seam through several layers of canvas is hard work and it's worth saving your hands undue stress.

The purple handled pliers are from @crewelworkco and I love them for heavy work.
One of those little #sewing tips that has saved me One of those little #sewing tips that has saved me a lot of pain - if you’re not going to make a full pattern piece, but you want to cut your fabric flat instead of folded, put a pattern weight “in your way,” to stop you from cutting down the center back, front, or whatever on your pattern. Its so easy to lose track of what you’re doing in the heat of the moment and cut without thinking! #sew
A quick #sewing tip today on matching stripes! The A quick #sewing tip today on matching stripes! There are a lot of ways to do this. This method is the one we usually try first if a fabric is sturdy enough to survive being pinned, basted, and possibly rebasted before a final seam. #sew
At the risk of starting a raging debate, this came At the risk of starting a raging debate, this came up in @jsterndesigns' class this week - are you Team #MachineStitchEverything or Team #HandStitchAlready? We decided that hand-stitching is probably "worth it" for an area like the inside back of a collar stand. Even if you're really careful at the #sewing machine, it's hard to keep that line of stitching just so on both the inside and the outside of the collar. (On the other hand, you can't *really* see it when the collar is in its usual position, so....@laraneel will probably keep just machine-stitching it and hoping for the best when she can't talk @lisacneel into doing her hand-stitching for her.) What do you think?
