Two fixit #sewing days in a row! I’m testing out a dartless cami and the fabric kind of wants a dart. I’m going to attempt a solution for shortening the front armhole at the pattern stage, but in the meantime, I do want to wear this version, too. Elastic to the rescue! I measured the elastic against the pattern piece, took out 3/4 of a inch in length, and zigzagged it to the too-big edge. Photo 1 for elastic, photo 3 for “fixed” side and photo 2 for unfixed side. Today’s #memadmay2021 look is “make it work!” This is my first pair of @greenstyle_patterns’ Brassie joggers. I loved them, but the low-rise option was way too low for me! This was a shock, since low rise styles typically fit well on me. It could be that my fabric has less vertical stretch than the pattern expected. Actually, that’s almost certainly true, since I’m almost 4 inches shorter than the drafted-for height, yet the legs fit without any alteration. Anyway, I cut a contoured waistband and just sewed it to the top of the original top. It worked well and I wear these about once a week! #sewing #sew

Today is day 3 of #memademay2021 #mmm21 #mmm2021 and I’m wearing a dress I recut into a velvet tunic last spring, some striped undies you can’t see and my super-fun slippers that don’t fit into this mirror! I used to kind of obsess over wanting everything to be made by me, but I also love stealing @deemilroy ‘s jackets, so there’s got to be some balance there. RTW jacket is from Banana Republic and it’s a really nice layering piece. I may try to copy it in blue denim. One day.

Today’s #SewApril2021 theme is “details matter.” The most important detail in my current #sewing project (a Folkwear French Cheesemaker’s Smock) is something you can’t really see. It’s advice/help from @lisacneel! I don’t #sew a lot of history-inspired things, but I do want to slowly conquer some of those skills. Having someone to ask “why do these instructions make no sense to me” is so huge when starting something new. Also, a tip: when sewing white fabric, wash your hands first. Today’s #sewapril2021 theme is plaid love and I really love plaid! I have two pairs of plaid pj pants and am planning more. This is butterick 5153, heavily altered to add pockets, lower the waistline, and change the waist from a cut-on casing to a knit + elastic waistband. #sewing #sew #rylissbod #fiberstofabric #stitchwitchpatterns #patternstopaper

Something simple for an early May gift. I’ll change this quite a bit, but I love using #StretchAndSew patterns as #sewing starting points.

I’m a little anxious today, so I dealt with it by looking up organizations like @racialjusticemn and #sewing. I am still so grateful to my former coworker, Linda Neubauer, who told me that you don’t need a serger to #sew knits. (How did someone (me) who didn’t even sew or know anyone who sewed think that? It’s a mystery.) To prove the point, I made my first @greenstyle_patterns Sundance Jacket completely on my 1967 Singer Touch And Sew machine. I only made a few small changes from the pattern instructions. I didn’t think I would love a zigzagged finish on the inside of the bottom hem, so I used fold over elastic on that edge. I also used fusible knit interfacing along the front zipper edges and on the sleeve hems. That extra body made sewing those areas much easier! When I do my next version, I will add interfacing to the hem facing, zipper guard, and collar. The pattern instructions consider interfacing optional, but I’ve decided that this fabric needs interfacing so that it will take a press, at all. Spots are still available to go over the tricky bits of this jacket in class with me on May 22! Check out twinsnneedles.com for more details.
